Prof. Jacek Mańdziuk and Dr. Kamil Deja join ELLIS Unit Warsaw

ELLIS Unit Warsaw is pleased to welcome Prof. Jacek Mańdziuk and Dr. Kamil Deja as new members of the Unit, further strengthening its research profile in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Prof. Jacek Mańdziuk, affiliated with the Warsaw University of Technology, joins ELLIS Unit Warsaw as a Co-Director. He is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science, Warsaw University of Technology, and Head of the Division of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Methods. Prof. Mańdziuk is a Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and has held numerous international research positions, including as a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar at UC Berkeley and ICSI Berkeley, and as a Visiting Professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His research spans a broad range of topics in artificial intelligence, including AI for security and social good, bilevel optimization, abstract visual reasoning, games, and human–machine cooperation. He has published extensively in leading journals and top-tier conferences such as ICML, AAAI, IJCAI, and AAMAS, and has played a key organizational role in major international AI conferences.

Dr. Kamil Deja is an Assistant Professor at the Warsaw University of Technology and a Researcher at the IDEAS Research Institute, bringing a strong connection between theoretical machine learning and interdisciplinary applications. His research focuses on generative modeling, with particular emphasis on Diffusion Models and their applications in computer vision, audio synthesis, and scientific discovery, including high-energy physics and protein design. Dr Deja has held visiting positions at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Amazon Alexa, and has collaborated with the ALICE experiment at CERN. His current work addresses challenges related to transparency and controllability of AI systems, with a focus on mechanistic interpretability, model adaptation, and precise control of generative processes.

The addition of Prof. Mańdziuk and Dr. Deja reflects the continued development of ELLIS Unit Warsaw as a collaborative environment bringing together expertise from the Warsaw University of Technology and the IDEAS Research Institute, and supporting cutting-edge research aligned with the mission of the European ELLIS network.
