Dariusz Plewczyński Joins ELLIS Unit Warsaw

We are happy to welcome Prof. Dariusz Plewczyński as a new member of ELLIS Unit Warsaw. His work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence and modern genomics, where large-scale biological data meets advanced machine learning. By combining BioAI methods with questions about genome function, regulation, and structure, he contributes to a growing research landscape that aligns closely with ELLIS’s focus on cutting-edge, human-centered AI and data-driven science.

Dariusz is a Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science at Warsaw University of Technology, where he leads the Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics. He is also a Principal Investigator at the Center of New Technologies (CeNT), University of Warsaw, heading the Laboratory of Functional and Structural Genomics.

His research focuses on BioAI, combining artificial intelligence and machine learning with functional and structural genomics. He works with large-scale datasets from major international initiatives such as 4D Nucleome, 1000 Genomes, UK Biobank, and ENCODE, developing computational methods to better understand how genomes function, vary, and organize in three dimensions.

A key part of his work connects genome sequence and variation with gene regulation and 3D chromatin architecture, using conformation capture data (Hi-C, ChIA-PET, HiChIP), epigenomics, and biophysical modeling supported by deep learning. More recently, his research has expanded toward virtual cell modeling, aiming to link multi-omic and 3D genome data with cell-state dynamics.
